Tyler-Puccioni, Jaime

Jaime Tyler-Puccioni is a dual PhD student in the departments of Educational Policy and Curriculum, Instruction and Teacher Education. She began her work in education as an Admissions Counselor and Coordinator of Ethnic Student Recruitment at Linfield College in Oregon. She joined the teaching staff at Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. Middle School in the Los Angeles Unified School District in 2000. During her five year career at Johnnie Cochran Jr. Middle School she was appointed to the school-wide leadership team. As a member of the leadership team, Ms. Puccioni worked as the lead English and History Sixth Grade Teacher, responsible for mentoring new teachers as well as developing and conducting professional development workshops which focused on improving literacy achievement for English Language Learners. As a member of the leadership team Ms. Puccioni worked in conjunction with Action Learning Systems to implement a highly cohesive school-wide curriculum based upon scientifically proven literacy strategies which led to a 26 point increase in student CAT 6 scores. Ms. Puccioni not only worked as a faculty leader, she also pursued her Professional Clear Multiple Subject Credential with Cross-cultural Language Acquisition Development emphasis as well as a Masters Degree in Education. During her third year of instruction Ms. Puccioni was awarded the Teacher of the Year award by the Johnnie L. Cochran student body.

Ms. Puccioni has also worked as an instructor in the Teacher Education department at Michigan State University. She has taught a variety of courses with topics including: Learners and Learning in Context (Content Area Literacy), Social Studies Methods for Elementary Educators, Reflection and Inquiry in Teaching (Elementary Education), Internship in Teaching Diverse Learners for Elementary Educators and Professional Roles and Teaching Practice for Secondary Educators. During the 2009-2010 school year, Ms. Puccioni, served as the Coordinator of the Urban Educators Cohort Program at Michigan State University.

Ms. Puccioni, not only works as a professional teacher educator at MSU, she also conducts research with Dr. Kim Maier. Last year, Dr. Maier and Jaime Puccioni conducted a study which examined the effects of advanced course taking in mathematics and science on academic performance and post-secondary matriculation. Furthermore, as a recipient of a Summer Research Fellowship, Jaime was able to pursue her own line of research, which examined the relationship between parents’ school readiness expectations and kindergarten reading achievement. Ms. Puccioni’s scholarly work is in the area of educational stratification in early childhood and elementary education. When Jaime is not working on her doctoral studies she is spending time with her wonderful six-year old son and husband. She is also an avid swing dancer and Lindy Hop instructor in Lansing.
