Program
Requirements:
Students intending to qualify for
Michigan Secondary provisional certification (valid to teach in Michigan grades 6-12 in
the major and minor areas) will complete a teaching major, a teaching minor, a sequence of
professional education courses, an Internship-Year Studies Program and pass designated
competency tests.
Disciplinary
Teaching Major
A teaching major in a single subject area consists of a minimum of 30 semester
credits and a group major consists of a minimum of 36 semester credits. Students are assigned a faculty advisor in the
major department and must meet graduation requirements as outlined by the College of their
major as well as certification requirements.
Students will be held to a minimum GPA of 2.5 to be
eligible for the Internship Year for each of the following: university overall cumulative GPA, teaching major,
and/or minor(s).
Disciplinary Teaching Minor
A teaching minor in a single subject area requires a minimum of 20 semester credits and a
minimum of 24 semester credits for a group subject disciplinary minor. Consult the Teaching Minor packet for
requirements.

Professional Education
Courses
TE 150 (3 credits) & TE 250 (3 credits) can be taken during the
freshman and sophomore years and are prerequisite to TE 302.
(Note: Kinesiology and Communicative Sciences and Disorders majors take CEP 240 in
lieu of TE 250.)
Students must be formally admitted to the College
of Education. See Admissions Process.
Once admitted to the certification program students take TE 302 during the junior
year and TE 407 (5 credits) in the fall of
the senior year and TE 408 (6 credits) in the Spring of the senior year. Students will be held to a minimum GPA of 2.5
or above for the pre-internship, professional education courses required for teacher
certification with no individual grade below 2.0.
Technology Requirement
The State of Michigan Department of Education requires that students demonstrate
awareness, proficiency, and expertise in personal productivity and pedagogical technology
in order to be recommended for a teaching certificate by Michigan State University.
Competency
Examinations
Pass tests designed by the State of Michigan for teaching certification. The Basic Skills must be passed prior to admission
to the TE program & required subject area tests must be passed prior to the internship
year.
Bachelors Degree:
All baccalaureate requirements must be fulfilled and the bachelors degree conferred
prior to beginning the internship year.
Criteria
for Progression to the Internship:
All standards (academic, testing requirements and
professional standards) must be fulfilled as specified on the
website.

Internship
Year
After successful completion of the Internship and Planned Program of Study and fulfillment
of all State of Michigan requirements, certification will be recommended. The internship includes a full year of study and
experience in a selected school. TE 501, TE
