Important note: Individuals who complete a minor (instead of a major) in East Asian Languages and Cultures (Japanese) cannot be considered "highly qualified" to teach this area in grades 6 - 12 according to "No Child Left Behind" federal standards UNLESS they pass a state certifying test, which is currently not available. It is planned by the Michigan Department of Education to have a certifying subject test for this subject area available beginning October 2007. Questions regarding this note should be directed to an advisor in the College of Education, Student Affairs Office."
