Team Assignments,
Field Placement, & Intern Preferences:
Team Assignments
Upon admission to Teacher Education, students are assigned to a particular TE Team. Assignments are made on the basis of teaching areas of emphasis, demographic balance and internship location preference. You will be informed of your team assignment upon admission. Assignments are made as follows:
Elementary Education students
- There are currently two elementary teams.
- The local or Lansing Area ("LA") Team includes internship placements in the greater Lansing area, Jackson or Grand Rapids.
- The distance or Detroit Area ("DA") Team includes internship placements in the greater Detroit area, including Detroit, Pontiac or Flint.
Secondary Education students
- All secondary students are assigned to the Secondary Team ("SEC").
- Internship placements are made in the Lansing area and selected distant sites.
Special Education students
- LD majors will be assigned to the local or Lansing Area ("LA") Team and will intern in the greater Lansing area.
- Deaf Education majors will be assigned to either the local or Lansing Area ("LA") Team which includes internship placements in the greater Lansing area, Jackson or Grand Rapids; or to the distance or Detroit Area ("DA") team which includes placements in the greater Detroit area, including Detroit, Pontiac or Flint.
Post-Bachelor students
- Assigned to a team when admitted to program.
Field Placements Students enrolled in TE 301 through
TE 402 are placed for field work in the greater Lansing area in
order to minimize travel time. For the internship year, field
placements are made in the Lansing area and in selected sites that
are distributed more broadly as listed above.
The first consideration in
making field and internship placements is to prepare you for
certification in Michigan.
To do that, we place you in situations that match the teaching
certificate you intend to earn, and which prepare you to teach
diverse students in diverse settings. We also seek to place you in
settings which best fulfill your educational needs as we see them.
Our second consideration is to place you in schools with which we
have developed good working relationships and which support a
productive combination of course work and field work. Our third
field placement consideration is preferences you may have for
internship placements within the area that your Team serves. Under
no condition are students allowed to negotiate their own
placements.
*Music majors and
Audiology and Speech majors are not assigned to a team and their
placements are arranged directly by their major departments.
