  1. Education Studies (21 Semester Credits)

TE 150 (3 credits) & TE 250 (3 credits) can be taken prior to admission to the TE program and are prerequisite to TE 301. (Note: Special Education majors take CEP 240 in lieu of TE 250.)

Students must be formally admitted to the College of Education.  See Admission Process Statement.

Once admitted to the certification program, students take TE 301 (4 credits), TE 401 (5 credits) and TE 402 (6 credits).  Students will be held to a minimum GPA of 2.5 or above for the pre-internship, professional education courses required for teacher certification with no individual grade below 2.0.

  2. An Academic Major approved for Elementary Certification or Completion of two approved Academic Minors:

Consult the Teaching Minor Packet for minor requirements.

For students choosing an academic major consult with the College of the major.

Students will be held to a minimum GPA of 2.5 to be eligible for the Internship Year for each of the following:  University overall cumulative GPA, teaching major, and teaching minor(s).

  3. Planned Program for Elementary Education:

Twenty or more credits in a core curriculum that are not double counted with the student's teaching major/minor.

  4. Math Requirement

    MTH 201 (3 credits) and MTH 202 (3 credits)

(Note:  MTH 201 is a prerequisite for TE 401 for elementary education students.)

  5. Technology Requirement

The Michigan Department of Education requires that students demonstrate awareness, proficiency, and expertise in personal productivity and pedagogical technology in order to receive a teaching certificate.  Demonstration of specific skills must be completed prior to the internship.

  6. Competency Examinations

Pass tests designed by the State of Michigan for teacher certification.  The Basic Skills test must be passed prior to admission to the TE program and the test called “Elementary Education” must be passed prior to the internship year. Elementary interns who wish to be placed in 7th or 8th grade must also pass the test in their teaching major or minors prior to the internship year.

  7. Internship Year

After successful completion of the Internship and Planned Program of Study and fulfillment of all State of Michigan requirements, certification will be recommended.  The internship includes a full year of study and experience in a selected school.  TE 501, TE 502, TE 801, TE 802, TE 803 & TE 804 (24 credits)
