For All Applicants
This program is designed for individuals who have completed a bachelor’s or higher degree and who are rated at least intermediate-high in their reading, writing, listening, and speaking abilities in Mandarin Chinese with simplified characters and pinyin. This program is designed to begin in early summer.
The online application for teacher education admission must be received (including copies of transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, personal information page, and conviction disclosure from), and all official copies of TOEFL scores by
January 4, 2010. There is no application fee for this program. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
To complete a Chinese Experimental Post-Baccalaureate teacher certification program application:
- You must complete the online Chinese teacher certification program application.
- You must submit a completed hardcopy of the Conviction Disclosure Form
(PDF)
- Photocopies of all transcripts from any/all colleges/universities attended to 115 Erickson Hall. An official transcript must be sent from the degree-granting institution(s) to 115 Erickson Hall. East Lansing, Michigan, 48824. For candidates with degrees from foreign institutions, transcripts must be evaluated by one of three authorized agencies.
- For non-native speakers of English, you must submit your TOEFL/TSE scores.
Tests Required for Chinese Experimental Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification Program Admission
- For non-native speakers of English:
TOEFL: iBT with an average score of 80 or above and no sub-score below 19, and a score on the writing component of 22 or above.
- Only the iBT will be accepted. Test scores from up to 24 months prior to admission can be submitted.

- For all candidates:
MTTC-Basic Skills and MTTC-FR: with passing scores on all sub-sections.
- Candidates who are not currently residing in the US may register for, and take, the MTTC Basic Skills test when they arrive in the US.
- All other applicants must provide proof that they have passed the MTTC Basic Skills test to be admitted to the program.
- The MTTC-FR endorsement test for Mandarin Chinese must be taken and passed by all candidates prior to the College of Education can recommend a candidate to the Michigan Department of Education for certification/endorsement.

For non-native and heritage speakers of Mandarin Chinese, you must submit ACTFL OPI Mandarin Chinese scores indicating at least an intermediate-high level of proficiency. For more information on arranging ACTFL OPI testing, its costs, and proficiency measures, please visit the

For all candidates who are already certified teachers, recommended by either an American college or university or a foreign college or university, please provide either a copy of your Michigan teaching credential or submit your transcripts to the Michigan Department of Education for credential review.
