Assessing intern performance
In the internship, assessment's first purpose is formative, that is, to help the intern to learn to teach, as well and rapidly as possible. That is demonstrated, in part, by the fact that the field instructor's first tool is just a sheet of multi-copy paper, on which the field instructor writes descriptions of classroom activity and comments about it. Mentor teachers also are encouraged to provide this form of feedback
The second purpose of assessment is summative, that is, to determine whether or to what extent the intern is meeting the standards that the program sets for interns. Intern, mentor teacher, and field instructor all participate in summative evaluations at the middle and end of each semester. As the year progresses, formatiove evaluation continues, while summative evaluation becomes more and more important.
Field instructor feedback form . When an intern begins to do an appreciable amount of lead teaching, the field instructor will begin to use this rubric, in conjunction with the note-taking paper.
Assessment of progress form. Intern, mentor teacher, and field instructor complete this form separately as they prepare for the mid-semester assessment conference and the end-of-semester assessment conference.
