Elementary Education 

Elementary Program Requirements:


Students intending to qualify for Michigan Elementary provisional certification (valid to teach in Michigan all subjects in  grades K-5 and in subject areas [major/minors] in grades 6-8) must complete the following requirements:

  1. University Graduation Requirements:

    Integrative Studies (ISS, ISB & ISP, IAH)

    University Writing Requirements (WRA-Tier I-Formerly called ATL) & Tier II within major.

    Math Requirement:  Math 201 (University requirement) and MTH 202 (College of Education requirement)

  2. Education Studies:    TE 150 & TE 250 can be taken during the Freshman and Sophomore years and are prerequisite to TE 301. (Note: Special Education students take CEP 240 in lieu of TE 250>)

    Students must be formally admitted to the College of Education.  See Admission Process Statement.

    Once admitted to the certification program, students take TE 301 during the Junior year and TE 401 in the Fall of the senior year and TE 402 during the Spring of the senior year.  Students will be held to a minimum GPA of 2.5 or above for the pre-internship, professional education courses required for teacher certification with no individual grade below 2.0.

  3. An Integrated Teaching Major (within College of Education), an approved Disciplinary Teaching Major (oustide College of Education) or completion of two approved Teaching Minors:  For students choosing a Disciplinary Major consult with the college of the major.  Students will be held to a minimum GPA of 2.5 to be eligible for the Internship Year for each of the following:  University overall cumulative GPA, teaching major, and teaching minor(s).

  4. Planned Program:   Twenty or more credits in a core curriculum that are not double counted with the student’s teaching major/minor.  See College of Education website or an education advisor for details.

  5. Math Requirement:  MTH 201 and MTH 202
    (Note:  MTH 201 is a prerequisite for TE 401 for elementary education students.)

  6. Technology Requirement:   The Michigan Department of Education requires that students demonstrate awareness, proficiency, and expertise in personal productivity and pedagogical technology in order to receive a teaching certificate.  Demonstration of specific skills must be completed prior to the internship.

  7. Competency Examinations:    The Michigan Test for Tearcher Certification (MTTC) Basic Skills test must be passed prior to admission to the TE program & required MTTC subject area tests (i.e. the test “Elementary Education”) must be passed prior to the internship year. Elementary Education candidates who request internship placements in grades 7-8 must also pass appropriate subject matter major/minor tests prior to the internship year.

  8. Bachelors Degree:  All baccalaureate requirements must be fulfilled and the bachelor’s degree conferred prior to beginning the internship year.

  9. Criteria for Progression to the Internship:  All standards (academic, testing requirements and professional standards) must be fulfilled as specified on the website.

  10. Internship Year After successful completion of the Internship and Planned Program of Study and fulfillment of all State of Michigan requirements, certification will be recommended.  The internship includes a full year of study and experience in a selected school.  TE 501, TE 502, TE 801, TE 802, TE 803 & TE 804 (24 credits)
