Being
an advocate with the Client Assistant Program
perfectly fits my desire to help people, especially
those from multicultural communities, to understand
American systems and get the services they need.
I receive calls from anyone who is receiving services
from the public rehabilitation system. If the
person has concerns about a counselor or decisions
made by an agency, I listen to him or her and
then talk with the other involved parties. We
rely upon agency policy guidelines and the codes
of federal regulations (CFR) to find informal
solutions when possible, and we go to hearings
if necessary. I especially enjoy reaching out
to minority communities, and I have had some contacts
with the Arab Community Center for Economic and
Social Services as well as the Latino and other
communities. Because of my training as a Rehabilitation
Counselor I am able to understand the counselor's
perspective as well as the client's. I also have
the counseling skills that help with the process
of mediation.
