I
received my Bachelors degree from Pennsylvania
State University in Rehabilitation Education,
My master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling
from Michigan State University and my PhD from
MSU in Rehabilitation Counselor Education. My
Masters and PhD provided me with incredible opportunities
for employment. I have been employed in variety
of positions including Grant Coordinator, Director
of Clinical Services, Program Manager, Rehabilitation
Consultant, Program Coordinator, and as an instructor.
I’m currently employed by MSU as a Research
Associate and Director of Project Excellence.
This program provides The Michigan Department
of Rehabilitation Services with data and analysis
regarding the impact of public rehabilitation
services provided to persons with disabilities
in Michigan, I am also employed as a Research
Coordinator of the Michigan Rehabilitation Corporation
and serve as the primary investigator of an integrated
program designed to assess the efficacy of systems
serving homeless individuals and families with
alcohol or other drug related issues. The degree
(s) allows me to work with a diverse population
in a variety of settings. I have been able to
work creatively and with independence. My education
has provided me with the opportunity for input
and impact in the lives of persons with disabilities
and the chance to enhance their quality of life.
Although rehabilitation is a small community,
job opportunities are available for persons who
are creative, tenacious about achieving their
goals and qualified. To advance in this field
you must keep up with what’s going in the
field and keep your credentials up to date. It’s
important to pay attention to what’s going
on within your agency. Being an active participant
in your own continuing education will allow for
better services for your clients and increased
ability for you to advance in the field.
