| I
received my Ph.D from the Rehabilitation Counselor
Education program at Michigan State, during the
summer of 2002. I am currently employed as an Assistant
Professor in Rehabilitation Counseling at Minnesota
State University. This degree has helped me to realize
a number of goals, primarily the opportunity to
write at the professional level. I have accomplished
this once, and I am currently working on more that
I hope will be of some benefit to counseling theory
and practice.
For new graduates or persons considering entering
the program, I think it's important to emphasize
the need for persons to bridge the gap between
counseling research and counseling practice in
the area if rehabilitation counseling. It is sometimes
difficult to see the important connections between
these two. Many others have stated, and I agree,
that one way to do this is to seek out qualitative,
or interpretive, research opportunities. I think
that such a research approach can enhance the
humanistic qualities important to the counseling
relationship, and help students to better understand
the applicability of disability research.
