Program Blocks

The MACT course requirements are organized into four “program blocks” that reflect the program’s goals and its balancing of required courses and course selection flexibility for meeting students’ individual needs and interests. 

The courses as listed below are presented for informational purposes only and are subject to change without notice.  Please check with your advisor for the latest information on any changes. 

Please also attend to the “footnotes” (indicated by the use of asterisks [*]) that provide additional information about any restrictions on course enrollments, the use of some courses for Michigan Department of Education endorsements, etc.

 

Program Block 1:

Inquiry into Professional Development and School Culture

  • TE 807 should be taken as early in the program as possible.

  • TE870/872 is to be taken at the end of one’s program. 

  • TE 807 is a prerequisite for TE 808.

  • TE 807, TE 808, and TE 818 are prerequisites for TE 870 and TE 872.

  • The prerequisites noted above mean that it takes a minimum of three semesters to complete the program.

 * Open only to students in the MA in Curriculum and Teaching (MACT) program.

  • Students who have completed the MSU teacher certification internship program durin the Fall 2004-Spring 2005 academic year or earlier will be able to count TE 803 as the second course requirement in this block.
     

  • Students who complete the MSU teacher certification internship program during the Fall 2005-Spring 2006 academic year or later will not be able to count TE 803 as the second course requirement in this block.

**** Completing these three courses is a necessary but not sufficient condition for the Michigan Department of Education’s “reading specialist” endorsement.  For that endorsement, one must also be in and complete the requirements of the  Master of Arts in Literacy Instruction (MALIT) program.

***** These courses are interdepartmental with Teacher Education.  Students enroll in CEP 805, 806, or 826 respectively.

In consultation with and with the approval of one’s advisor, students choose 6 credits from any of the courses in Program Blocks 2 and 3, or from other departments’ courses in the university.  The following special topics courses and “independent study” options are also possible with one’s advisor’s approval:

  • Students who have completed the MSU teacher certification internship program duirng the Fall 2004-Spring 2005 academic year or earlier may use TE 801 as one of the two courses required in this block.
     

  • Students who complete the MSU teacher certification internship program during the Fall 2005-Spring 2006 academic year or later may use TE 801 and TE 803 as the two courses required in this block.
