Office by the January 15th deadline.
International
applicants who plan on coming to campus to study in residency should
allow even more time for the request and receipt of their materials
from various geographic locations and institutions. Realistically,
you should begin the application process 7 months prior to the January
15th deadline.
Application
Review Process
Applications for admission to the MACT program are reviewed by faculty
who look for evidence of appropriate preparation for advanced disciplinary
and professional study at the master's level and the likelihood
of academic success, as indicated by an applicant's prior education
record, work experience, statement of professional goals, letters
of recommendation, and an assigned professional essay.
Criteria
for admission and the review process
Review
of applications for admission to Michigan State University occurs
at two levels. One is at the university level and one at the department
level in our college. Once your application file is complete and
all materials have been received in our department, faculty will
review your file and vote to accept or deny your application based
on several criteria published in the university catalogue and by
the department.
Applicants
must possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
and a 3.0 grade-point average for the final two years of undergraduate
study. Consideration is also given to the academic record (quality
of undergraduate preparation and courses taken, grades earned in
major areas of study), statement of goals and the match of these
to our program, a required professional essay, teaching or professional
experiences, and three reference forms or letters of recommendation.
The GRE (Graduate Record Exam) is not required by our program, but
the university requires English Language Tests or the TOEFL of all
non-English speaking, international applicants where English is
not the language of their instruction. Applicants must score 550
or above on the TOEFL to be considered for possible admission to
our program. Achieving this score does not guarantee an applicant's
admission to our program, even provisionally, since faculty consider
multiple criteria in their review.
The Program
Coordinator reviews each of the committee's recommendations, makes
the final decision on admission, and assigns each new student an
academic advisor. The recommendations from the review committee
and Coordinator then go to the university's Office of Admissions
and Scholarships where all graduate applications are processed for
final approval. The M.A. Program Coordinator notifies each applicant
by formal letter of the department's admission decision and, if
admitted, who his or her advisor will be with the advisor's office
address and phone number. The department's decision is pending until
the university formally admits an applicant.
