When I have my
application package ready to turn in, what parts do I send to the program and what do I
submit to the University?
We need a copy of the university
application, the three letters of recommendation, current resume, writing sample, goal
statement and copies of all original transcripts (if the student wishes, they can request
that originals be sent to us along with the request MSU). It is VERY important that the
university does get the original transcript however. The department is mainly concerned
about GPA and the faculty reviewer will look to see what types of classes the student took
in their undergraduate program and what grades they received. Some students have had their
final applications held up by the university because the Graduate Admissions office didn't
receive a transcript from a college or university that was declared. So it is VERY
important for the student to follow-up on this part of the application process.
What
examinations are required for application to the program?
The Graduate Record Examination is not required for
application to the program. However, the Test of English as a
Foreign Language is required for international students
whose native English is a language other than English.
What type of writing
sample should I submit?
Generally speaking, the writing sample should be a paper that was submitted for a
class that allows the reader the chance to see how the student presents a topic that they
are writing on. It gives the reviewer the opportunity to see if the student is prepared
for and ready to begin the masters program. Submit the best paper you have in you
possession. Remember, this is really the only chance the review committee has to see what
you have done.

Are there any statistics
that show how long it usually takes to complete the degree if you go full-time? Part-time?
No. However, a student has five (5)
years to complete the degree from the time they begin. This includes LifeLong Education
course too. And students usually need no more than three years to complete the degree
(attending part-time).
How and
when will I be notified if I have been accepted to the program?
The admission
deadlines are October 1 for admission to the Winter/Spring semester and
February 1 for admission to the Summer and/or Fall semester. The review
usually happens within three to four weeks of that time frame. Applications
are accepted in the summer, though reviews do not occur until after October
1. You will be notified by letter that you have or have not been
accepted. In the letter you will be instructed to notify us whether you
are coming in writing. The formal notification will also come from the
university.
Do I apply for TA positions or Graduate Assistantship positions at the same time I enroll?
If you are interested in applying for a TA position you need to submit the form for assistantships with an attached resume. You can obtain the form from the chairperson's secretary in the department office in 313 Erickson Hall. Please note, most TA positions are given to Ph.D. graduate students. We don't want to discourage anyone from applying however, if you are interested it is advisable to submit your application as early as possible. Decisions on employment will begin in last spring and throughout the early summer months. If you have questions please call department secretary at 353-0696.
