Dr. Nell K. Duke

(Ed.D. Harvard University)



    Dr. Duke is an Assistant Professor of Teacher Education and a researcher with the Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement (CIERA). Nell has worked with children in early childhood, elementary, and secondary settings. Her primary research and teaching interests regard early literacy development, particularly among children living in urban poverty. Her recent research projects include studies of the development of informational literacy in young children, comparative study of print environments in low- and high-SES schools, the development of genre awareness and knowledge in early schooling, and alternative models of one-to-one literacy instruction for struggling reader-writers.
