Nils Joseph Kauffman: Gill-Chin Lim Award for Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation in Global Studies Nils Joseph Kauffman received his Ph.D. in educational policy from Michigan State University in 2009. His dissertation, Empty Pedestals: Creating a National School System in an Era of Globalization, offers a complex analysis of the education system in Moldova from the end of the Soviet through independence to the present. His study focuses on educational change in a culture facing extraordinary societal change. This is the first in-depth, scholarly analysis of a mass education system that went through a period of acute national decline, precipitated by the country’s economic and political woes. [more information] Dwi Yuliantoro: Homer Higbee International Education Award Dwi Yuliantoro is a doctoral student in the College of Education’s Curriculum, Teaching, and Education Policy program. A Fulbright scholarship from Indonesia brought him to MSU in 2006. Since that time, he has been deeply involved in international education activities on campus. Yuliantoro is a natural leader with infectious enthusiasm and has accumulated an impressive list of contributions to MSU. [more information] 2009 Gail P. Kelly Award for Outstanding Dissertation in Comparative Education Kristin Phillips, Assistant Professor in the Department of Teacher Education Kristin Phillips, Assistant Professor in the Department of Teacher Education has been awarded the Gail P. Kelly Award for Outstanding Dissertation in Comparative Education in 2009. KristIn’s dissertation title was "Building the Nation from the Hinterlands: Poverty, Participation, and Education in Rural Tanzania” (2009). Kristin's dissertation was completed during her doctoral study in University of Wisconsin. It was selected from the pool of nominations which was unusually large this year (a total of 18 nominations submitted). The Kelly Award was presented to Kristin at the Annual Meeting of the Comparative and International Education Society held in Chicago, March 1-5, 2010. [more information] Confucious Institute of Year 2009 For the third time, The Confucius Institute at Michigan State University was recognized as Confucius Institute of Year at the opening ceremony of the fourth annual Confucius Institute Conference in Beijing 2009. Cantho University Honors Chris Wheeler (10/2006) The American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE) honored MSU’s College of Education with its Best Practice Award for Global and International Teacher Education on February 1, 2006. The award, sponsored by AACTE’s Committee on Global and International Teacher Education, recognizes exemplary practice in preparing education professionals for work in intercultural, global, cross-cultural, and international settings. The award was presented at AACTE’s 58th Annual Meeting in San Diego, January 29–February 1. Distinguished Academic Staff Awards 2005 Anne Schneller, drawing on years of experience living and working in other countries, has made extraordinary contributions to work for which Michigan State University recently received the prestigious Goldman Sachs Prize for Excellence in International Education. With characteristic vigor, creativity, and efficiency, Ms. Schneller has pursued external funding, developed study abroad programs, strengthened links with scholars and universities abroad, and helped forge a strong internationally oriented community within the College of Education. MSU Wins 2004 Goldman Sachs Foundation Higher Education Prize for Excellence in International Education (11/2004) MSU has received the 2004 Goldman Sachs Higher Education Prize for Excellence in International Education. In addition to the honor, the prize includes $25,000 for the university. There are five Goldman Sachs prizes in international education each year. Only one goes to a university or college.
