Information for KIN students interested in the HERL
Dear Students:
Welcome to the Human Energy Research Laboratory (HERL) at Michigan State University. The HERL has had a long tradition, with great scientists such as Arthur Steinhaus, Henry Montoye, Wayne Van Huss, and Bill Heusner performing cutting edge research within its walls. It is certainly an honor to have a small part of the HERL operations in the new millennium.
We welcome any and all students interested in working in the HERL. Indeed, student research is a major reason why the HERL exists on this campus. It is student research, mentored by faculty, and translated into scientific or lay publications, that continues to make the HERL an important vehicle for the advancement of the body of knowledge in exercise physiology.
To keep the lab running smoothly, and to insure quality research, teaching, and service within the HERL, a few guidelines are needed. There is a written manual located in the HERL (Room 3 of the IM Sports Circle Building), that outlines the basic procedures for many of the tests and experiments that are performed in the lab. Feel free to stop by and read this manual at your convenience. Obviously, for individual research projects, the specific guidelines may be altered as needed. Also, the manual is a living document that may be updated frequently, given the rapid advances in exercise physiology techniques and equipment. The bottom line is that this manual should serve as a guide for basic laboratory procedures. For questions about specific research projects (including thesis or dissertation work), or other specific questions, please contact the current HERL director. As of this writing, the director is Jim Pivarnik, Ph.D. (517/353-3520; jimpiv@msu.edu).
Thank you for joining us, and we hope your learning experience is a good one.
