Survival, Part II:
Personal Resources

This is a new topic for your digital advisor. As you know, we digital beings don't have emotional or personal needs. Nonetheless, I understand from other students that some of you do, so I am beginning this new page. Please let my human caretaker, Mary Kennedy, know of other resources that should be listed here.

Family Sustenance

If you are trying to manage doctoral studies and a family as well, you will probably benefit by connecting to the Family Resource Center. This wonderful place was recommended by a harried doctoral student just like you. This center connects you to babysitters, other parents, counselors, and a variety of forms of assistance. Connect with other parents to share advice, sitters, cribs and clothing. They provide free emergency back up babysitting too. Learn about this place and take advantage of it.

Housing

The university manages a couple of searchable indexes that might be of help here.  If not, try the bathroom stalls in Erickson Hall.  Lots of people place ads for sub-lets inside these.

Survival Courses

The University also offers courses for doctoral students that are geared toward where you are in your program. You can go to the Career and Professional Development web site to learn more about available courses and their schedules. This program is sponsored by the Graduate School.

Financial Assistance

They come up suddenly and the positions tend to be filled quickly so that the projects can get under way. The best way to get one is to make sure that grant-active faculty know you are looking for one. Send an e-mail out to those faculty who tend to do work of the sort you think you would be interested in. Cast a relatively broad net and repeat your inquiry at regular intervals because research funding is very capricious and unpredictabl

Fellowships and Scholarships

are all listed on a department web page.
