Fellowships for Continuing Students

The college awards a number of fellowships and tuition scholarships. Most are awarded on a competitive basis to especially promising new doctoral students and are typically made in the spring term preceding entry into the program. Fellowship recipents must be enrolled in a degree program on a full-time basis (taking a minimum of six credits in coursework per semester), but are not required to give formal service to the college or program in return for the award.

MSU Spencer Research Training Grant Fellowship

These two-year awards are for continuing doctoral students in their second or third years who show strong promise as future educational researchers. The aim is to induct these students into the theory and practice of educational research through close work with a faculty mentor and a community of scholars. The award includes a fellowship, research assistantship, and travel support proving a total stipend of about $21,000 per year. This two-year fellowship program will consist of three tasks (a critical review of a literature, an apprenticeship of observation participation, and a pilot study) and three supporting social structures (a dyad of mentor-mentee, a community of learners focused on content, and a community of learners focused on methodological issues).

Professional Development Fellowships

There are limited funds to support various forms of professional development. Typically, this means that doctoral students presenting the results of scholarly research at national conferences, for example, may request support for travel or other extraordinary expenses from their department chairs and from their department fellowship representatives. The Graduate School also provides limited support for similar activities. Award are usually limited to $500 or less.

Dissertation Completion Fellowships

The College of Education offers a limited number of fellowships designed to help students complete their dissertations by relieving them of assistantship duties. These awards are typically made during the fall semester based on a review of applications submitted by students. Recipients are awarded about $5,000 during the spring semester.

Endowed Fellowships

Over 40 fellowships are available for students who show promise of making significant contributions to particular areas of education. More information is available from the Office of External Relations and Student Affairs and the College webpage.
