Fellowships
for New Students
The
college awards a number of fellowships and tuition
scholarships. Most are awarded on a competitive basis
to especially promising new doctoral students and
are typically made in the spring term preceding entry
into the program. Fellowship recipents must be enrolled
in a degree program on a full-time basis (taking a
minimum of six credits in coursework per semester),
but are not required to give formal service to the
college or program in return for the award. Entering
students are automatically nominated for fellowships
for which they are eligible. In addition, a
number of fellowships and scholarships are available
to continuing students, as well.
Michigan
State University Distinguished Fellowship
These
four-year awards provide a combination of a university
fellowship and a college graduate assistantship with
a stipend of more than $22,000 per year during the
first and fourth years of doctoral study. During the
second and third years, the college supplies fellowship
and assistantship support equal to the university's
fellowship contribution in the other two years. This
award includes health coverage and covers student
fees; tuition is also covered up to six credits per
semester including the summer. The total value of
this award can be more than $27,000 in a given year.
The awards are offered to approximately 20 individuals
per year from across the university's advanced degree
programs. They are highly selective and are reserved
for students demonstrating the most distinguished
potential for success at the university. Newly admitted
doctoral students who are U.S. citizens or permanent
residents will be automatically competed for these
