Planned Program for Elementary Education:


All courses are required unless otherwise stated.  The Planned Program must total at least 20 credits, that are not double counted with the teaching major or minor areas.

Planned Program for Elementary Education:  20-25 credits

  1. Both of the following mathematics courses (6 credits counted here)

    MTH 201 Elementary Mathematics for Teachers 3 credits
    MTH 202 Elementary Mathematics for Teachers 3 credits

NOTE:  The completion of MTH 201 may also satisfy the university mathematics requirements.
MTH 201 is a prerequisite for TE 401

  1. The following course on children’s literature  

    TE 348 Reading and Responding to Children’s Literature 3 credits

NOTE:  This course meets the Children’s Literature requirement for the Language Arts Integrated Teaching Major but the 3 credits count on the planned program.  English minors may not count this toward the minor, unless they have “spare” planned program credits.
TE 348 is a prerequisite for TE 401

  1. One of the following courses on language acquisition and development  

    ENG 302 Introduction to English Language 3 credits
    CSD 333 Oral Language Development 3 credits
    LIN 200 Introduction to Language 3 credits

NOTE:  Language Arts Integrated Teaching Majors or English minors may count this course toward these major or minor areas, in which case 0 (zero) credits count on the planned program.  English majors may count ENG 302 toward the major, not the planned program.

  1. The following course on science in elementary schools

    SME 301 Science for Elementary Schools  3 credits

NOTE:  This course is waived for Integrated Science Teaching Majors.

  1. One of the following U.S. History courses

    HST 202 US History to 1876 4 credits
    HST 203  US History since 1876 4 credits

NOTE:  Both of these courses are required for the Social Studies Intergrated Teaching Major (0 credits counted on the planned program for the History Concentration; 4 credits counted on the planned program for the Geography Concentration).

  1. The following geography course

    GEO 204 World Regional Geography 3 credits

NOTE:  This course is required for the Social Studies Integrated Teaching Major (0 credits counted on the planned program for the Geography Concentration; 3 credits counted on the planned program for the History Concentration).

  1. One of the following arts courses:

    IAH 241A Music and Society in Modern World 4 credits
    IAH 241C Cultural Traditions of Europe 4 credits
    IAH 241E The Creative Process 4 credits
    MUS 463 Elementary Music I 3 credits

NOTE:  Students may use IAH 241A, IAH 241C or IAH 241E to satisfy the IAH “B” course component of the University’s Integrated Studies requirement in Arts and Humanities (4 credits may count both on planned program AND toward integrative study requirement).
