Two
of the burning interests in my life are diversity
and disability, and my degree in Rehabilitation
Counseling has given me opportunities to work
in both areas. Following graduation I worked for
several years in Independent Living and other
disability advocacy areas. I have continued to
be active locally and nationally as a member of
the National Association of Protection and Advocacy
Governing board and serve currently as the President
of the Michigan Protection and Advocacy Governing
board. As a Native American, I have served on
National and local boards and continued to train
as a consultant in the areas of cultural competency.
Since 1996 I have been the Psychiatric/Brain
Injury specialist in the Resource Center for Persons
with Disabilities at MSU. I work with students
who are experiencing educational problems as a
result of psychiatric or brain injury disabilities,
helping them to receive the accommodations necessary
for a successful experience while at MSU. My degree
has given me the knowledge base and the flexibility
to branch out in various directions while still
maintaining my original core goals and values.
