I
graduated from MSU in 1998. I have a B.S., in
Psychology and a M.A. in Rehabilitation Counseling.
I am currently employed at the Ann Arbor Center
for Independent Living, and my title is Vocational
Rehabilitation / Independent Living Counselor
I've wanted to work at AACIL since my first contact
in 1979 while in rehabilitation at University
of Michigan for my spinal cord injury. I've always
wanted to affect people's lives in positive ways.
Persons with Disabilities are often discounted
for their ability to contribute to society in
positive ways. Having an advocate's heart, I've
always fought injustice and have always wanted
to change that perception of persons with disabilities.
My degree has given me the knowledge and skills
that I need to help those with whom I work and
gives me the credibility that I sometimes need
to be taken seriously as a person with a disability.
I have the knowledge and skills to help my peers
and consumers with disabilities. My education
has given me the knowledge, skills and credentials
to advocate effectively for all persons with disabilities
in our society, individually and collectively.
My degree helps me to apply my knowledge and experience
in positive ways to truly improve the lives of
those with whom I work. It's an exciting time
to be in this profession. There are so many directions
to grow...
Words of wisdom?
Never under-estimate human potential.
Disability should not equate to poverty.
It's only impossible when you can't imagine it.
