Integrative Studies and Writing Requirements:

Students who enroll at Michigan State University need to complete the following Integrative Studies and Writing requirements:

INTEGRATIVE STUDIES REQUIREMENT

To satisfy the University requirement of 24 credits in Integrative Studies a student must complete:

  1. 8 credits in Integrative Studies in Arts and Humanities

  • IAH A Course (choose one from IAH 201 through IAH 209) -- 4 credits

  • IAH B  Course (IAH 241A, C or E) -- 4 credits

  1. 8 credits in Integrative Studies in Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences

  • ISS 220 (or approved alternate course in social science) -- 4 credits

  • one 300-level ISS course (prerequisite - one 200 level ISS course) -- 4 credits

  1. 8 credits in Integrative Studies in General Science

  • one ISB course (3 credits) Prerequisite - Math 103 or concurrently. (General Science Integrative Majors may substitute BS111)

  • one ISP course (3 credits) Prerequisite - Completion of Math 103 or higher. (General Science Integrative Majors may substitute CEM 141)

  • one lab course taken concurrently with ISB or ISP course (2 credits). (General Science Majors may substitute BS111L and CEM 161).

  1. At least two Integrative Studies courses that emphasize diversity.

  • one course designated "I" and one designated "N", or

  • one course designated "I" or "N" and one designated "D".

 "I" - emphasizes international and multicultural diversity

 "N" - emphasizes national diversity

 "D" - emphasizes both of above.

 

WRITING REQUIREMENT

To fulfill the University Writing requirement a student must:

  1. Complete a 4-credit Tier I writing course from the Department of Writing, Rhetoric & American Cultures (WRA) formerly called ATL

  2. Complete the Tier II Writing Requirement approved for the student's major.
