Master's Degree Program

Admission Criteria and Application Procedure


An applicant for admission to the master's degree program in special education is required to submit:

1. Both departmental and University application forms, and

2. Three letters of recommendation from persons knowledgeable about the applicant's academic potential to pursue graduate study and teaching competence or potential.

Applications are reviewed by faculty who look for indications of high probability of success. The following factors are significant in determining admission to the program:

1. Grade point average of 3.00 or higher in all undergraduate and graduate courses.

2. Valid Michigan teaching certificate

3. Experience working with children and youth with disabilities (e.g., in a school or camp program) that is acceptable to the faculty. Ideally, the experience should be related to the applicant's planned area of emphasis.

4. Professional goals that are consistent with the objectives of the program.

5. Scores from either the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test or the Miller Analogies Test that are acceptable to the faculty.

6. Two official copies of transcripts

7. Current vita or resume

8. Performance on the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview for students who plan to pursue the deaf education area of emphasis.
